HUNTINGDON VALLEY, Pa., June 25, 2017 — Farlex, Inc., publisher of the world's most comprehensive dictionary, announced today that its flagship website, www.TheFreeDictionary.com, has welcomed its 10 billionth visitor, just after celebrating the site's 14th birthday.
The Internet looks a lot different than it did when The Free Dictionary was born in 2003, and the website has grown up along with it. After debuting as a simple dictionary tailored to American users, The Free Dictionary has since evolved into one of the most comprehensive and authoritative reference websites in the world. Today, the site serves an international user base, providing free access to general dictionary content in more than 40 languages; plus medical, legal, financial, science, computing, and idioms dictionaries; a thesaurus; several encyclopedias; and much more.
"Reaching the 10 billion-visitor milestone is a great way to celebrate our 14th birthday," said Steve Boymel, co-founder and vice president of Farlex, Inc. "We're thrilled that more and more users have made The Free Dictionary the first destination in their search for accurate information."
TheFreeDictionary.com reached 5 billion visitors just before its 10-year anniversary in 2013, and then doubled that number in just four years. Along the way, it added a comprehensive grammar guide, greatly expanded its idioms dictionary with more than 1,000 animated videos, and released dozens of top-rated dictionary apps.
"The goal from day one was to build The Free Dictionary into the world's most comprehensive dictionary and reference site," said Nick Simonov, co-founder and president of Farlex, Inc. "We've achieved that goal, but we're not going to stop there. As we look to the future, our top priority is to continue our core mission of providing people with fast, free access to reference content they can't get anywhere else."
