Farlex Publishes New English and Multilingual Content on TheFreeDictionary

HUNTINGDON VALLEY, PA, December 3, 2009 - Farlex, Inc., publisher of the world's most comprehensive database of online reference material, has announced the addition of a number of new titles to its flagship site, expanding TheFreeDictionary.com's multilingual sector and enhancing the site's English dictionary content as well as its medical, financial, and legal encyclopedia sections.

Farlex’s developers have been hard at work adding new features and titles to TheFreeDictionary’s already expansive collection. The full content of both the Collins English Dictionary: Complete and Unabridged and the Collins Thesaurus of the English Language: Complete and Unabridged will now complement the site’s already extensive dictionary and thesaurus material. In addition to the expanded standard dictionary and thesaurus sections, TheFreeDictionary now boasts even greater encyclopedia and specialized dictionary content with the addition of five more titles, including the Collins Discovery Encyclopedia, McGraw-Hill Dictionary of Scientific & Technical Terms, The Mortgage Encyclopedia, The Complete Real Estate Encyclopedia, Burton's Legal Thesaurus, and The Investopedia Guide to Wall Speak. These publications contain hundreds of thousands of entries that span the fields of science, finance, real estate, and law; and while they are advanced enough for professionals, they are composed in a clear and concise manner that also makes them accessible to the general public.

Though the Farlex team spent much time laboring on the English language portion of the site, they did not neglect their international user base. In May 2008, Farlex made its initial foray into multilingual content hosting, adding foreign language resources to its flagship site for the first time. Since that time, the site’s foreign language content has grown by leaps and bounds. TheFreeDictionary’s popular homepage, which in August 2008 was made available in 10 new languages—Chinese, Dutch, French, German, Greek, Italian, Norwegian, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish—has now been translated into three more languages: Polish, Arabic, and Turkish. In conjunction with the launch of these three new homepages, TheFreeDictionary has added Polish, Arabic, and Turkish dictionary content from K Dictionaries, a leader in the learner, bilingual, and multilingual dictionary industry.

In addition to these developments, much of the site’s existing international dictionary content has been updated and expanded. For example, the entire content of the Collins English/French Electronic Resource, Collins German Dictionary: Complete and Unabridged, Collins Italian Dictionary, and Collins Spanish Dictionary: Complete and Unabridged can now be easily accessed on TheFreeDictionary. These invaluable educational resources include hundreds of thousands of entries as well as translations to and from English.

Another exciting addition to the TheFreeDictionary is the Collins Multilingual Translator, a database of 26 languages that contains some 10,000 entries per language and 2,000 phrases per language, plus recorded audio files—spoken by native speakers—for all content. All words come with relevant linguistic information, such as part of speech and gender. Entries can be translated to and from any language in the set, making this resource suitable for businesspersons, travelers, and language learners alike.

“As students around the globe seek to supplement their studies both in and out of the classroom, TheFreeDictionary will be there to enhance their learning experience,” said Steve Boymel, co-founder and executive vice president of Farlex, Inc. “We are thrilled to be able to provide the international community with some of the same valuable educational tools available to our English-speaking users and look forward to developing all facets of the site as we continue to grow.”
